Battle For Boulder Badge

After the devastating loss of Rascal, I went back to training out on Route 2 with Lucky. There was no way a mere Metapod was going to stand up to Gym Leader Brock. I had confidence that Rascal, Nibbles and Kiwi would help me earn the Boulder Badge, but without Rascal my confidence faltered. It took us a few days, but eventually Lucky sprouted wings and evolved into Butterfree, a significant improvement over the lovably little lump of a Pokémon he was as Metapod. I did not neglect Kiwi and Nibbles during this time, either, but their progress was a bit less important.
Once Lucky had evolved, I spent what little money I had on a couple of potions at the PokéMart. Although they were expensive, I would not let another Pokémon fall in the Pewter City Gym. I absolutely would not. My nerves were shot as I stepped into the gym for the second time. I remember I was sweating and shaking just thinking about facing Brock. I saw the Junior Trainer who had bested my poor Rascal. He gave me an approving nod, but it did little to improve my disposition. Brock stood at the far end of the gym and beckoned me forward. He had seen my fight with the Junior Trainer several days ago and was eager to face me.

I clenched my jaw tightly as I threw out my first Pokémon. Kiwi met Brock's Geodude face-to-face in the gym's arena. We wasted no time kicking up as much dust as possible to obscure Geodude's vision. Brock had Geodude spend most of its time curling up into a defensive ball, but every now and then it lashed out with a tackle that it simply couldn't land on Kiwi. When I felt it's accuracy was sufficiently incapacitated, I withdrew Kiwi and used Nibble to wear down the Geodude slowly but surely. The Geodude was powerless in the dust Kiwi's sand-attack had kicked up and against Nibbles relentless tackling.
Then Brock threw out his champion, the Onix. I tossed Kiwi back into the ring hoping to repeat our earlier performance on Geodude. Kiwi kicked up as much sand as he could, but Onix still managed to land a lucky strike on him. It hurt Kiwi enough to discourage me from keeping Kiwi on the field any longer. Nibbles was sent out while Onix merely bided his time. I knew immediately that any attacks on Onix while in this defensive state would be unleashed twofold onto its attacker. Your only choices are to crush it swiftly, which is difficult against a rock hard Pokémon like Onix, or to wait it out.
Nibbles began to stare down his opponent while it remained in its defensive posture. Slowly this would lower the Onix's defenses and leave it vulnerable to a massive strike. Eventually, Nibbles was exchanged for Lucky who covered the Onix in its string shot while it continued to wait for our attacks. Feeling safer, Kiwi returned to the battle to continue whipping up sand into Onix's face. Then as soon as Onix released its defensive posturing, Kiwi slammed it with a gust from his wings and knocked the Onix to the floor.
That was how I won my first badge in the great region of Kanto.

Brock was impressed and clasped me firmly on the back with a great slap of his hand. He knew about Rascal, of course, and was pleased at my stance on training. He liked how patient and defensive I was and as a reward not only gave me a handsome sum of PokéDollars, but a Technical Machine that would teach certain eligible Pokémon his Onix's signature technique of biding time and waiting for the counter strike. This strategy didn't really work out well for Brock that day, so I wasn't sure how I would incorporate it on to a team that I intended to take as few hits as possible. I didn't want to be rude, though, so I graciously accepted the TM #34 and the Boulder Badge.
I was now officially on the road to challenge the Indigo Plateau League. I really hadn't come to Kanto expecting to do something quite that dramatic, but I was slowly being pushed in that direction. Professor Oak had prompted me to take this journey and running into Wolf made me question what the journey really meant to me personally. The encounter with the snarky trainer in Viridian City helped me shape my personal goals and encouraged me to challenge the gyms to seek reputation and understanding in the world of Pokémon training. Now, I had my first badge pinned proudly to my backpack and I was on my way to the next adventure — with considerably more money to spend thanks to my winnings.

Looking For My Painting Mojo

As is probably apparent from the silence in my blog I haven't really been interested in doing any painting for a while. My rush to the finish line in the painting challenge was bit of a dud with plenty of things on the table, but I just couldn't get anything finished up. Those have now been pushed aside to wait for some inspiration to finish them at some point.

Lack of painting mojo isn't anything new though as frankly I haven't really felt super interested in painting anything since last summer or autumn. I have periods where it's fun to paint up things, but I just can't bring myself to crank out unit after unit of minis in similar garb. At times painting yet another Napoleonic unit or some more WW2 stuff seems too much like a job. This does tend to cause some issues as the games I like the most tend to require quite a lot of minis with an average Napoleonic division coming at around 200-300 15mm minis in our games for example.

Interestingly the thing I'm disliking the most at the moment is painting with a brush. Airbrushing is still ton's of fun, but somehow when I need to go in and pick out details to finalize stuff all motivation goes out the door.

Even though I can't get myself painting, it doesn't mean I've abandoned other aspects of the hobby. I've actually been playing quite a lot lately with version 4 of Flames of War being a ton of fun despite some of the oddities and rules that I disagree with. The old edition and lists were starting to be boring and this really brings a fresh way to play the game without making it too different from the previous editions. Dropfleet has also been fun to play as well as all the different board games that I've gone back to.

So with a plenty of gaming and other activities I'm slowly trying to find my painting mojo again. One thing that I'm not going to do is trying to force myself into painting any larger projects for a while as that's really killed my interest in brushwork. I'm only painting whatever seems cool at the moment and not stressing about even getting it finished. Last weekend was quite fun with some airbrush work on additions to my Dropfleet army as well as on a Chaos Rhino that I'd built up last summer and started on by airbrushing a base layer of different rust shades. I tested a some chipping products from Ammo of Mig that allow you to paint over a previous layer and by wetting it again you can scratch of some of the top layers. Worked out quite nicely and now the Rhino is waiting for some detail and decal work before I can get to washes.

My mancave has also got a bit more furniture and it's starting to look more like what I want it to be. Another desk was bought for the PC so that I don't have to cram everything onto one desk. Some storage solutions for books etc. were also added which aren't really visible in the picture. Finally I bought some more paint racks from Warbases as well as new paint from a  newish brand called Warcolours. Haven't had time to test them out properly yet, but from the test pieces I did they really seem very promising! Not ideal for historicals, but strong vibrant colours and a nice 5 shade colour setup that should prove great for fantasy and scifi stuff.

With that rant out of the way  I'm off to celebrate easter. My parents are visiting Finland for a week so some time will be sent with them as well as the in-laws. Nice to have a four day weekend after a few weeks of working 10-12 hour days.

Lite-On Super AllWrite 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive – Bulk – IHAS124-04 (Black)Price: $17.99

Back to the good ol'Lite-on optical drive. Honestly, I say again and again, I pay very little attention to how I choose the optical drives – I simply choose the cheapest one. So if you find a cheaper one, get it. Likewise, if you don't actually think you'll use it, then skip it. You can instal your OS via a USB stick or an external hard drive if that's the only reason you would need it, however this will be completely up to the builder.

Quickstart Guide To Configuring The Driver Post-Installation

So, you've got the driver installed and want to see what you can do with it.  What next?  Well, if you are using the latest version of the interception driver, it includes a Wizard that will give you some starting settings to give a shot.  They are calibrated based on your mouse DPI, and it should effectively double your sensitivity as you approach flick speeds.  If you'd rather tweak settings on your own, you can follow these instructions:

First thing's first - click the Settings dropdown menu followed by "Set USB refresh rate".  Choose whatever your mouse is running at.  Do the same thing for Mouse DPI.  Note that the USB refresh rate option will change the way your curve looks, but changing it in the GUI won't affect what your mouse actually polls at.  DPI here is solely for reference in the GUI/screenshots of the GUI - it has no impact on your mouse or the graph otherwise.

The rest of this guide will limit discussion to the basic options (acceleration, sensitivity cap, and post-scale x/y) that most people will want to use.  All other options will be left at the defaults.

First, hop into your game of choice.  Take it out of fullscreen and get into a game mode where you can look around without worrying about people killing you.

I'll assume a simple intended use case: you want to have decent medium to long range tracking with hitscan weapons, but still be able to flick a 180 when needed.  I have Quake/Reflex/Overwatch players in mind, but this could apply to many other games.  Counterstrike players might want to have lower sensitivities and more accel than I'm suggesting in this starting guide, but feel free to tweak no matter what game you are playing.

Are you a low sensitivity player (i.e.: 20"+ of mousepad to a 360)?  If so, follow direction set A).  Otherwise, follow direction set B).

Direction set A) for low sens players:
Since you have a low sensitivity, I assume you're going to want to keep your existing low speed tracking sensitivity and find a new comfortable flick mouse sensitivity.  Make sure your current sensitivity is familiar to you in game for tracking, and we'll keep your in-game sensitivity setting the same and post-scale x/y the same (1's).

Try setting the sensitivity cap to 2, and set acceleration to something crazy high like 10 (this won't be permanent).  Effectively what will happen is that your in game sensitivity will have doubled.  Give flicks a test and see if you can get comfortable doing a 180.  Don't worry about doing any smooth tracking with this yet.  Move the sensitivity cap up/down a bit until you find something that works for flicks.

Next, change the acceleration to 0.01.  How does that feel?  Does it take too long to get to the high sensitivity?  Raise it a bit to 0.02 or 0.03.  Does it go up too quickly?  Lower it.  Tweak to your heart's content while practicing flicks, long range tracking, medium range tracking, and close range tracking.

Once you find something you like, be sure to save your profile.  It's always worth saving your profiles as sequential numbers just so that you can come back to them if you decide you don't like any recent tweaks you've made.

Hypothetically, let's say you want to change your low end mouse sensitivity and keep your flick sensitivity the same.  Go under the "Settings" dropdown menu and check the boxes for "Scale Accel with Post-Scale X" and "Scale SensCap with Post-Scale X".  Next, tweak your Post-scale X/Y values a little bit.  Your curve should keep the same slope and max sensitivity.

Direction set B) for medium to high sens players:
You most likely installed this driver because you want to have better tracking for long to medium range, but you want to keep your muscle memory the same for flicks.  So, we'll start out by making sure you can comfortably do a 180 with a flick you are used to.  For reference, it takes me 5 inches of mousepad to do a 180.  Keep the driver settings default while you adjust in-game sensitivity accordingly.

Now that you've got a flick you are happy with, go under the "Settings" dropdown menu and check the boxes for "Scale Accel with Post-Scale X" and "Scale SensCap with Post-Scale X".  While you're at it, also check the box for "Lock Post-Scale Y to Post-Scale X" (unless you want to have a different vertical sensitivity from horizontal). Set your "Sensitivity Cap" value to 1, "Acceleration" to 0.01, and click "Save Changes" (this won't immediately do anything, but it's required, trust me).

Next, try setting your dropping your Post-Scale X sensitivity to 0.5.  How does that feel?  Can you still do a 180 in a flick comfortably?  If not, raise your acceleration.  If it feels like the sensitivity raises too quickly, lower the acceleration.  It's all tweaking from here.  Mess around with different values for the Post-Scales and try out tracking targets at different distances.

Once you find something you like, be sure to save your profile.  It's always worth saving your profiles as sequential numbers just so that you can come back to them if you decide you don't like any recent tweaks you've made.

Ending notes
After you've spent all this time tweaking your mouse sensitivity for one game, you wouldn't want to do the same thing for other games, right?  Be sure to use http://www.mouse-sensitivity.com/ to find out what one game's setting should be for another.  All you'll need to take over is the in-game sensitivity setting, and your accel settings should feel perfectly at home (barring any poor programming/built in game accel/etc).  Using that site, all I ever need to do to get comfortable in a new game is enter my Quake sensitivity of 1.15 and find out what the equivalent is in another game.

The Battle Of Lonely Hill

There's no better way to come up with a solution for a nagging problem than to stop thinking about it.

The NorthWest Mounted Rifles had galloped forward to seize the hill (seebut were driven off by the Zouaves. The swift arrival of reinforcements allowed the Queen's forces to drive off the Zouaves in turn.
In this case my original intention was just to tweak my Square Brigadier rules so I could use more figures and play longer games without them dragging. However, lurking below the surface was that suppressed urge for something more like playing with toy soldiers and less like a board game even if that board game worked well and was fun.

Both sides rushed reinforcements to the front. An indecisive long range firefight followed while the armies extended their lines and prepared for a decisive attack.
What I ended doing, step by step without seeing where I was headed was creating exactly what I had wanted, a fairly conventional toy soldier game with units of individual figures (even if fixed to bases for convenience) but using a grid for measuring.
The Queen's forces won the build up race. (1 die each turn for 4,5,6 to bring on a new unit.

The key decisions were to use larger units on smaller squares and to allow units to spread across multiple contiguous squares, measuring movement, ranges and arcs of fire  separately by 3" square. (Invisible or nominal squares at the moment but soon to be marked.)

The Rebels have no option but to strike before the odds get worse or give it up. A fierce and prolonged close quarters fight resulted but the attack was eventually thrown back.
The result was so much like a simplified MacDuff game that I borrowed the morale and charge resolution and various other rules from MacDuff as well.

An attempt to rally was broken up by rifle and artillery fire and with all of the Rebel Brigadiers wounded, the Rebel army suddenly collapsed.
The result was exactly what I have been looking for. Now to bring my 6 and 8 figure infantry units up to 12, do some dismounted cavalry, get some limbers painted up  and......
